The Chennai Linguist

Listened to the songs from 'Pudupettai' as yet?

If not, listen to a song that goes by the name 'Enga area ulla varaathe'
People from neighbouring states must really envy the large repository of slang words that people possess here. Venture out into some slum areas like Kasimedu, Royapuram and all fishing hamlets.....you'll find a vulgar taste to these words....

Lets start with some colloquial words that you ought to know here...

Vennai (Butter) : Has a brain that is as slippery as Oil on Granite floor (or) is basically like Suppandi.....In case you didn't know, Suppandi is the light headed character in a comic book.
Usage: Poda Vennai...

Paruppu : One who is a big show off....He is like a Project Manager who says he can finish 3 projects in one day!!
Usage: Mansula periya paruppu nu nenaippaa???

Attu : One who involves himself in doing galeej tasks (or) one who does oh-so-stupid tasks in contrast to another

Galeej : Doing something in an awkward manner....
Usage: avunga stage la galeeja dance pannanga da....

Mokkai: One who tries to convince that the others that he is telling something valuable...but is actually killing time....er, something I do often...
Usage: dei...mokkaiya podadha da..

Pazham: The tamil version of a Nerd...imagine a guy with soda bottle glasses sitting in class and all ears to what the professor says....that is one version....

Another version is a guy averse to alcohol....but eats the sidedishes alone...

The great Avvaiyar (Ancient Tamil poet) had dedicated a song to Pazhams....such is the patronage for these people....it goes like this...

Pazham nee appa...Gnana pazham neeyappa... (Fruit you are....Jackfruit you are...)

Kalaai: Tease a guy/ girl not so badly....causing all his/her friends to laugh...but the person finally goes pink in embarassment....

Got any more words???
